Historic Photos of New York

“The New York City Municipal Archives just released a database of over 870,000 photos from its collection of
more than 2.2 million images of New York throughout the 20th century. Their subjects include daily life, construction, crime, city business, aerial photographs, and more. I spent hours lost in these amazing
photos, and gathered this group together to give you just a glimpse of what’s been made available from this remarkable collection.”

Gay Power

“How to measure a person’s power? In a world in which we have inexpensive tools to reach billions, it may seem that the globe truly is flat, and we’re all on an even playing field. But a few exemplary individuals manage to influence the way others live — either through their public personas, politics, or wealth — and affect cultural and social attitudes.”

50 years ago there would never have been a webpage like this as back then we were all so bigoted and biased. I’m not gay myself but I made more than a few friends back in Thailand who were and whom I still hold in very high regard.

American Civil War Photos

“Last year marked the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War, a milestone commemorated by The Atlantic in a special issu.Although photography was still in its infancy, war correspondents produced thousands of images, bringing the harsh realities of the frontlines to those on the home front in a new and visceral way. As
brother fought brother and the nation’s future grew uncertain, the public appetite for information was fed by these images from the trenches, rivers, farms, and cities that became fields of battle.”

The Most Common Cooking Mistakes

“Every cook, being human, errs, bungles, botches, and screws up in the kitchen once in a while. If you have not “caramelized” fruit in salt rather than sugar, you have not suffered the most embarrassing mistake made by one of our editors. We did not have to look much farther than our staff―and their encounters with readers, friends, and relatives―to compile a list of 25 common, avoidable culinary boo-boos.”

How Much Is Your Data Worth?

“This calculator allows you to determine what your data bits are worth on
the open market so you can request proper compensation when it is asked
from you. For instance, a typical cellular phone company will ask for
your address, date of birth, phone number, Social Security number and driver’s license to open a new account. Consult our data calculator and that will be $13.75 please!”

Mine appears to be worth about $50 (£32)..

Man Walks All Day to Create Spectacular Snow Patterns

“Artist Simon Beck must really love the cold weather! Along the frozen
lakes of Savoie, France, he spends days plodding through the snow in
raquettes (snowshoes), creating these sensational patterns of snow art.
Working for 5-9 hours a day, each final piece is typically the size of
three soccer fields! The geometric forms range in mathematical patterns
and shapes that create stunning, sometimes 3D, designs when viewed from
higher levels.”

They look very much like crop circles – although there is still a lot of controversy over crop circles these snow ones are definitely man-made (you can see the footprints).
